A Good Day for Music

You may not know the name, but you are very familiar with his songs.

Glen Campbell

Galveston

A HUGE cross-over hit record in the spring of 1969. ‘Galveston’ was one of the songs that showcased the talent of country artist Glen Campbell.

However, the song was written by another talented artist, Jimmy Webb. Jimmy has also written numerous songs for artists like Linda Ronstadt, The 5th Dimension, Art Garfunkle and for Glen Campbell.

Jimmy was the son of a Baptist minister and wasn’t all that keen to the idea of his son becoming a songsmith. But when it came time for Jimmy to strike out on his own, he told his dad that he was leaving for Southern California to write songs. His father surprised him by giving him $40.00 and told him “It’s not much, but its all I have.”

Jimmy first gave ‘Galveston’ to singer Don Ho who put it as a ‘B-side’ single. Don gave the song to Glen during an appearance on the Glen Campbell TV show and said, “Here, I couldn’t make a hit out of this song, maybe you can.”

The rest is music history.
