Gary Lewis and the Playboys

Everybody Loves A Clown

This week on the music charts, Gary Lewis was the son of a famous comedy team who was making a name for himself when this song took off the later part of October 1965. The song was written by musician, Leon Russel. His house was something of a hub for other musicians to hang out and work their songs. It didn’t matter the genre either. It could be a pop song or country, rock, folk, bluegrass or gospel. It was the people who were bringing their ideas to share and usually came away with something to make their song better. Gary Lewis was one of those artists who hung out and worked in that creative atmosphere. In spite of the song’s title, Gary said in interviews that the song was not about his famous father, Jerry.

The song climbed into the number one spot on the charts, the last week of October 1965.
