I hated doing research papers in school. Don’t get me wrong, research papers were one of the more simpler things I did for higher education. It's just that it would always involve a few hours in the library in front of the card files writing down Dewey decimals on a piece of paper only to find the half hour you spent looking for the required reference materials, someone else had already checked them out.

Of course, that was years before the world got smaller and before Wikipedia. These days, a few minuets with a wi-fi connection, you can find anything about any subject. And although I knew that the information I was researching was important for my grade in class, I couldn’t get into the names, places and dates of human history. It really meant nothing to me.

Music is the one thing that can say has an appeal is universal and my opinion on research has changed quite a bit since KOOL FM started spinning the 'Wheel of Years' for the Top five at five. Every weekday afternoon, we look at the top five songs from the pop charts from that day in history and in doing the research for those songs, I usually find an interesting bit of detail that wasnt known about a song or band that everyone who listened to the radio in the 60's and 70's is familiar with.

For example, one of the hardest working bands weren’t really a band at all. They were hired as Los Angeles studio musicians who played on more hit records than any other group. I find in amazing that they were the background musicians who didn’t get any recognition for their work on some of the biggest hits ever. They called themselves The Wrecking Crew and now considered to be one of the more successful session groups in music history.
