A KOOL Day for Music

Movie soundtracks were very popular in the early 1980’s. No one thought this song would even make it to the theaters.

Joe Cocker/Jennifer Warrens

Up Where We Belong

Song that was written for a motion picture that became quite popular in 1982 that had several setbacks in its recording.

The film Officer and a Gentleman’s director didn’t think that Warrens had a good enough voice to carry the female part and the song’s producer had to practically drag Cocker into the studio to get him to record it. When studio executives heard the finished track, they hated it and didn’t want the song to be associated with their movie and tried getting another song written and produced. With time running out, they had to use the duet.

In spite what the professionals knew, the song topped the international music charts and both singers were awarded the Grammy for best pop performance.
