Idaho Is The Only State To Have A Woman Do This
It was the famous philosopher Beyonce who asked the age-old question – “who runs the world?”
Girls, duh.
That being said, I wasn’t surprised to learn Idaho is the only state in the country to have its seal designed by a woman.
If it’s been a while since you’ve brushed up on your Idaho history, here’s the seal in all its glory:
It was designed by Emma Edwards Green, the daughter of a former Missouri governor.
Emma rolled through Boise to visit friends & must have liked what she saw, because she decided to stay here and began working as an art teacher.
Shortly after that, she was invited to participate in a contest to design a state seal and won!
Her prize?
One hundred bucks!
If you’re wondering, that’s equal to $3,000 in 2021 dollars.
Her seal design featured a miner, a woman representing liberty, elk horns and our scenic Idaho mountains, as well as the Latin phrase "Esto Perpetua," which means "in perpetuity."
You go, girl!
