A Good Day for Music
Stevie Wonder
Sir Duke
Stevie Wonder was around 26 years old when he wrote his tribute to Duke Ellington. But it wasn’t his first attempt to pay homage to one of his musical inspirations. He wrote a song called ‘Bye, Bye World’ in 1968 about legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery. Even before that, when Stevie was 12 years old, he wrote a song to Ray Charles called ‘Tribute To Uncle Ray.’
He said that he had always wanted to collaborate with his musical idols, but always missed the chance. With the song that he wrote for the ‘Key Of Life’ album, he honors most of the artists and musicians who came before. People who he has said that he would have liked to perform with. Like Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald and, of course, Duke Ellington who passed in 1974.
Taking full reigns on the album, including producing, writing, arranging, composing and playing different instruments. Stevie takes the credit on the electric piano and percussion with lead vocals.
The song topped most every music category on the charts as well as becoming a top 10 record around the world.
