Five World Records Shattered In The Treasure Valley
I’ve been obsessed with world records my entire life.
As a kid, I would always make my parents buy me the Guiness Book Of World Records every year when our teachers would pass out those Scholastic book order forms.
I’d then read it cover to cover, circling all the records I thought I had a shot at breaking with my #2 pencil.
Although I never set the record for most miles walked while dribbling a basketball in 24 hours or fastest mile ran while blindfolded, I’m not bitter.
Okay, maybe a little bitter – but more so impressed by all the record-breaking performances that have happened right here in the Treasure Valley!
The list is quite extensive, but I’ve narrowed.
Without further ado – five world records set right here in our great state of Idaho!
1. LARGEST GATHERING OF PEOPLE SCRATCHING SCRATCH CARDS (July 19, 2019)
For the Idaho Lottery's 30th Anniversary in 2019, they went big! 479 people converged upon the Payette Brewing Company and scratched their way to a world record!
2. MOST PENCILS IN THE BEARD (December 31, 2020)
Last New Year’s Eve, Weiser’s Joel Strasser (an existing holder of the world records for most forks in a beard and most paper straws in a beard) stepped it up a notch. He rang in the new year in record-setting fashion, sticking a whopping 450 pencils in his impressive beard.
3. LONGEST TIME IN AN ABDOMINAL PLANK POSITION WITH 100 POUNDS ON BACK – FEMALE (September 23, 2016)
Talk about abs of steel! This one makes me sore just by thinking about it! Eva Bulzomi stayed in a planking position, with a pack that weighed 103.2 pounds on her back, for 11 minutes, 5 seconds. She also holds the records for time spent planking with 40, 60 and 80 pound packs on her back…way to go!
4. MOST CONSECUTIVE VOLLEYBALL PASSES BY A PAIR – FEMALE (August 23, 2014)
Teammates since 4th grade, Ashlyn Brush and Katelyn Westover (who are also cousins), scored this coveted world record in scenic Weiser, Idaho by passing a volleyball 3,002 times in the Weiser High School gymnasium! They crushed the existing record of 500, stopping only after their arms went numb. The temporary pain was worth it in order to get their names etched in the Guinness Book Of World Records (and their photos on the front page of the legendary Weiser Signal American).
5. MOST CREAM-FILLED BISCUITS STACKED IN 30 SECONDS (July 23, 2020)
Okay…where to start with this one?
Is it the fact that the Guinness Book Of World Record calls Oreos – “cream-filled biscuits?”
Or the fact that David Rush, the Boise resident who holds this record, literally wrote the book on record-breaking.
He stacked 38 “cream-filled biscuits” in 30 seconds, securing this record.
He also holds the record for most toilet paper rolls balanced on his head , the record for blindfolded juggling on a unicycle, the most wet sponge hits to the face in one minute, and literally hundreds more.
I want to be his friend.
David, if you’re reading this, will you be my friend?
You and all these other Treasure Valley record-breakers are an inspiration!
