A Good Day for Music

May 1967, a poppy little tune was written that gave America an eternal ear-worm that knocked The Beatles out of the number one spot on the music charts.

Turtles

Happy Together

Song that was written by former members of the New York based group The Magicians, Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon.

In interviews, Gordon sited that the idea came during a visit to a Brooklyn candy store and utilized the lead guitarists chord pattern for tuning his guitar. They roughly it recorded as a demo to be shopped around to record labels, but was rejected by many different artists.

The demo was picked up by The Turtles who were having personal and financial problems and thought that it would fit in with their sound and started rehearsals of the song during live performances.

The song took its time for audiences to react to the song, taking two or three weeks before reaching the top 20. But at the end of March, it has displaced The Beatles’ ‘Penny Lane’ from the number one spot and stayed at the top for three more weeks before being knocked off by Frank and Nancy Sinatra’s’ ‘Something Stupid’
