Doug Matlock
I’m a Boise State Football fan and have been since we moved her in 1998. Back then tickets were easy to get and I loved to sit in the north end zone bleachers. I actually got a defensive back from UNLV to fly the American Eagle at me, just before he got burned by a BSU wide receiver. Yes you could get that close to the game back then.
Scott Matlock is a defensive end for BSU and is making his mark on the game. Last weekend he had a game every lineman dreams of, including catching a pass for a touchdown.
Here’s where our paths cross. Scott’s dad Doug was a friend of mine. Doug did the tile in our kitchen, he was quite a craftsman when he came to tile. Doug was also proud of his boys, Steven and Scott.
I got a call from Doug one day, he had been diagnosed with Cancer. He called me for both advice and emotional help. The cancer scared him, but even more the thought of not being able to see his boys grow up and become men, scared him even more. Doug would do anything for Steven and Scott and he did. He told me he would blow everything he had on them before he left so they would remember him.
It sucks as I watch the games knowing my buddy isn’t here in the flesh to watch his son, but Scott, as you play this year, know this, your dad is watching and so are a few of his friends you don’t know and we all are proud of the person you’ve become. GO BRONCOS.
