A Good Day for Music

A song that broke the creative dry spell that the band was going through during the early part of 1976.

Fleetwood Mac

Over My Head

The reality is that bands will often go through times in their career when there is a creative dry spell. Probably more often than they care to admit. Nothing inspires them to write new songs and they pull something - Anything out to reach for an idea and see where it leads them.

Such was the case early 1976 with Fleetwood Mac, except their dry spell went on for six years. Granted, the band was going through difficult personal relationships within the group at the time, but it was Christine McVie who wrote the song and seemed to be inspired by the marital problems with husband, John McVie, although she has never said so publicly.

The marriage would later end in divorce, however, the members love of music was the thing that seemed to hold them together as a band. Fleetwood Mac considered ‘Over My Head’ to be a throwaway song and never thought that the record label would chose it as a single. It wasn’t long until other songs about their personal relationships were written by other members and making them one of the all-time best selling groups in history.
