A KOOL Day for Music
John Stewart
Gold
July of 1979, music was changing around the world. Disco was in its final death-spiral and new-age/punk music was starting to make headways on the music charts. Its took an American songwriter and musician who had already made his mark with successful contributions to the Folk music scene in the 1960’s. John Stewart first changed the music scene with The Kingston Trio between 1961 to 1967.
He scored a major victory when The Monkees first recorded his song ‘Daydream Believer’, writing the song after leaving The Trio. In an interview, John said that he only wrote the song because the record label was begging for him to write a hit record. So he did.
For ‘Gold’, he teamed up with long time friend Stevie Nicks for the recording while she was still formally with Fleetwood Mac.
Many music aficionados swear that playing guitar on the track is Linsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac. It not. Its just Stewart playing in the same style. Or, is it the other way round?
Stewart brings the song out from time to time during live performances, but says that the song just leaves him empty inside because it was another song that he wrote for the record label.
