A Good Day for Music
The Righteous Brothers
You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling
According music bean-counters BMI Publishing, this is one song that was played more times on American radio and television stations than any other song during the 20th century. (Not including Bing Crosby’s White Christmas. That is in its own category and for another time.)
Written by the husband and wife team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Phil Spector had just signed a new blue-eyed soul duo to his label and had requested that Barry and Cynthia write a song for them.
The songwriters started with the song title. Most will create a song around a line or a theme to develop a song around. Not in this case. In fact, they weren’t even happy with the title, but it would work as a place holder until they could come up with something better. They never did.
Most record producers will spend around three or four hours in the recording studio to get as many tracks done for a new album. Phil Spector was famous for spending a whole day getting one song perfect. This song came in under three hours of studio time.
The song still gets honors in the 21st century. Rolling Stone magazine rated it on the Greatest Songs of All Time list at number 34 in 2004.
