A Good Day for Music

One of the few British groups that successfully imitate the Motor city sound of Motown on this week in 1969.

Foundations

Build Me Up Buttercup

The Foundations came together in London in 1967. The group practiced and played in a basement night club called ‘The Butterfly Club’ which they managed and played nightly. They worked very hard at both club managing and writing and performing their music as the band handled the food deliveries as well as the cleaning, getting to bed around 6 or 7 in the morning, sleeping until 4pm and get up and do it all over again the next day for the nightly opening at 8pm.

Sometimes they barely made enough money to pay rent let alone feed themselves. During those lean times, they would eat whatever leftovers there were at the end of the night with added rice that was purchased by one of the members and shared with the others. They were the definition of doing what you love and of sacrifice.

The Foundations scored a number one hit in the States while this song made into the Top 5 on their own English music charts.
