Snoop Dogg’s DEBUT Album ‘Doggystyle’ turns 27 today!
I still remember the day. It was Christmas break and I was visiting my aunt and uncle’s house for the weekend and was going through my cousins Neeyata & Samata rooms’ being a nosy little kid.
They were teenagers at the time and I definitely looked up to them (and still do) I would try on their sneakers, admire all the cool posters they had hanging up on their walls, and read all of their magazines they had scattered around.
I came across this cassette that had a cartoon dog on it. “Snoop Doggy Dogg.” I popped it into the tape player.. and my life was pretty much changed FOREVER!
Snoop’s Doggystyle was the FIRST hip hop album and album in general I EVER listened to and have been a music fan ever since.. so I guess this explains my career choice?
I thought it was cool that the album even had a mock radio DJ narrating throughout the recording. I was HOOKED after track 3:
It’s crazy to think this album is almost THIRTY years old. Back in the 90’s, it was a big deal to get '5 mics' from The Source magazine. Snoop's debut album got lots of praise by critics, but only received 4 mics from The Source, because a staff writer felt like the album was 'rushed.'
There’s lots of other classics on it too- like Who Am I, Murder Was The Case, Ain't No Fun, and Lodi Dodi- which the latter made me unknowingly a fan of Slick Rick and had to learn about him next.
It’s been fun to have watched Snoop’s career over the years. I think I have probably seen him live in concert the most out of any other artist (6) and every time I go, it just brings back memories to that one weekend at my cousins’.
