A Good Day for Music
George Benson
On Broadway
Song that came together from a collaboration between Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller who wrote ‘Jailhouse Rock’ for Elvis.
Originally recorded by the Cookies, although the Crystals version was released first. As the story goes, Leiber and Stoller let it be known that they had booked studio time for the Drifters but they were a song short. Mann and Weil suggested that they record ‘On Broadway’. Leiber and Stoller liked the song, but wasn’t sure it was a right fit for the Drifters. The four spent the rest of the evening collaborating on a more upbeat-rock groove where it was a 1963 hit for The Drifters
Jazz-guitarist George Benson was awarded a Grammy for best R&B vocal performance that saw the most success with the record making a top 10 hit on the pop, adult contemporary and smooth-jazz music charts.
