Music producer Terry Melcher asked famed songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil to write something similar to their work with The Byrds’ first two albums.

Mann and Weil were already one of the most successful songwriting teams with Top charting hits recorded by The Ronnettes, Jay and the Americans, The Animals, The Righteous Brothers and so many others.

According to interviews, this song was originally written for The Animals, but they gave it a pass.

You have to remember that the song was released to the nation during the counter-culture revolution in the era of hippies and experimentation. However, decades later, the song generally receives positive reviews by the public and music critics since its release.

Recorded by a rock and roll band that started playing together in Caldwell.
