I was driving down Overland road between Cloverdale and 5 Mile the other day and there it was-one of the annual rites of summer here in the Valley-Chip Sealing!  Ok first of all why do they chip seal?  According to the  Ada County Highway District;

“As part of the maintenance program, crews chip seal street surfaces (including new streets) to protect from water and weather damage and to keep them in good condition. A chip seal application to a road or street has many positive benefits:

  • Maintains the existing pavement in its present condition by delaying further aging due to water and sun - this is equally important to new streets

  • Changes the texture of the road for skid resistance

  • Supplies minimal additional strength to the pavement

  • Provides a moisture barrier

  • Gives better resistance to studded tires

  • Corrects existing pavement problems by sealing cracks.”

Okay I get it, helps prolong the asphalt, that’s all good BUT what is not good is the guy in the next lane next to you and he sees the speed limit sign says 40, so they have to go 40 or faster, flipping all that chip material towards you and your windshield!  Now you get to stop by the guy, who always waves at you when you drive by, with the roadside windshield repair shop.  A suggestion from a guy who now has a chip in his windshield, SLOW DOWN!
